Scott stumbled. It was almost fully dark now, and he was walking blind in more ways than one. Didn’t know where he was headed, he just needed to move. He rounded a row of large trailers and saw people gathered around the now-raging bonfire. Laughter rose into the night air with the glowing embers, while the crackle and pop of fire played as a steady backdrop. He wasn’t ready to talk to anyone yet, even see anyone, so he turned in the opposite direction and headed toward the bathroom/shower outbuilding.

He was a coward. He was scared. And he’d almost kissed Cory. Oh my God. I almost kissed him. And he’d wanted to. Good God, he’d wanted to. But then that hand on his hip . . . The pressure had been gentle, but the intent was clear, and it ignited a firestorm inside, and that’s what scared him. Insta-hard-on. The wanting was too powerful. Kissing Cory would have meant crossing a threshold he hadn’t really prepared for yet. Accepting that he was gay was one thing, but until he could say it out loud—actually say I’m gay instead of just nodding his head or saying yes when asked directly—it was still somewhat abstract. He could keep it at a manageable distance without lashing out anymore. But the moment that abstract concept became a reality?

He pushed the door to the bathrooms open and strode to the sinks, turning on the cold water and splashing his face with it. He looked up into his warped reflection in the graffiti-scratched surface of a stainless steel mirror while water dripped from his chin.

You need to man up and be who you are. The voice was Brandi’s, but the words were his. Realizing he was a coward was a hard pill to swallow.

The door banged, and Scott jumped.

Two cowboys he recognized from the pro tour, Darnell and Roy, entered the small room and headed for the urinals. They hadn’t been all that close, but they were regulars on the circuit and they’d shared many a beer over the years.

“Hey, Scott,” Darnell said.

“Hey.” His heart picked up pace in his chest as he kept an eye on them in the mirror.

“Where’ve you been, man?” Roy asked over his shoulder. “Last we heard, you got arrested for beating up Tripp, and then next thing we know, Kevin and Billy are in jail for it and you’ve disappeared.”

Nothing in Roy’s voice read threatening. He was just a guy taking a piss and exchanging casual banter. Yet Scott fought to keep the shake that wanted to rattle his voice at bay. Had to come off nonchalant with these guys. “Just taking a break, is all.”

“And you show up here?” Darnell zipped and flushed, and then came up beside Scott to wash his hands. He slanted a look at Scott, studying him. There was no malice in his eyes, but something flickered in their hazel depths that gave Scott pause. Sweat broke out on the back of his neck. “See you got some new friends too, with those cowboys on the other team.
